The Alphonse D’Amato Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies Presents:
Shimelis B. Gulema, PhD in History from UCLA, is currently Assistant Professor of History and African Studies at Stony Brook University. His research interests include modern and contemporary African history and politics with a focus on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. His talk explores the trajectory of the complex relations between Italy and Ethiopia – especially in the 1896-1936 period – and some of the consequences they engendered. These include the impact on Ethiopia’s efforts at shaping an identity and its quest to become a modern state.
