REFLECTIONS ON ORAL HISTORY, WORKING LIVES AND POPULAR CULTURES: A Conversation with ALESSANDRO PORTELLI

Alessandro Portelli, internationally renowned for his work on American and Italian labor history, American literature, oral history, popular and folk music and people’s cultures will talk about his career as a scholar and activist since the 1960s with David Forgacs, Professor of Contemporary Italian Studies, and with Rachel Love, PhD candidate in the Department of Italian Studies at NYU.

Portelli’s books published in English include The Death of Luigi Trastulli and Other Stories: Form and Meaning in Oral History (SUNY Press, 1991), The Text and the Voice: Writing, Speaking and Democracy in American Literature(Columbia University Press, 1994), The Battle of Valle Giulia: Oral History and the Art of Dialogue (Wisconsin University Press, 1997), The Order has Been Carried Out: History, Memory and Meaning of a Nazi Massacre in Rome (Palgrave, 2003) and They Say in Harlan County: An Oral History (Oxford University Press, 2011).
