Sicily as a Theater of the World – A Conversation with Playwright and Director Emma Dante moderated by Teresa Fiore

Award-winning artist Emma Dante comes to the U.S. for the first time for a week-long stay at Montclair State U. She will share stories about her rich and complex trajectory as an iconoclastic woman artist hailing from Palermo, active in theater, film, opera, and literature, during an evening titled“Sicily as a Theater of the World” (Wed. Nov. 15, 6:30-8:30 – Lecture Hall 101 Feliciano School of Business), co-presented by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies and Arts & Cultural Programming | Peak Performances at the Alexander Kasser Theater.
This conversation with Emma Dante precedes four performances of her acclaimed show The Sisters Macaluso at the Kasser Theater (Nov. 16-19) within a Peak Performances season devoted to women innovators (see article in catalogue p. 28). The link between this show and Montclair State U dates back to 2015 when students and professors in the Italian Program developed the English surtitles for the play at the prestigious Piccolo Teatro di Milano for the Expo calendar. In what could be called an ideal virtuous circle, The Sisters Macaluso is now coming to our campus as part of a series of events stemming from cross-college collaborations that will be of interest to people in such fields as Italian, Performing Arts, Women’s Studies, among others, as well as the community at large.
